Using Admin By Request for Application Installation and Admin Access

This article explains how to use Admin By Request on macOS and Windows to either install software or request temporary administrator access. All activity is audited. Approved requests are valid for two weeks, after which a new request must be submitted.

macOS

✅ Requesting to Install an Application

1. Download the desired application to your computer.

2. Move the application into the Applications folder.

3. A prompt will appear requesting:

  • Your full name
  • PLNU email address
  • A brief reason for the request (minimum of 5 characters)

 

4. After submission:

  • You'll see a confirmation pop-up that the request has been sent.
  • You'll receive a notification and email once it’s approved or denied.

5. If approved:

  • Repeat the installation attempt.
  • Click OK when Admin By Request asks to make changes.

6. Review and accept the code of conduct.

7. A confirmation pop-up will indicate the installation is complete.

 

🛠️ Requesting an Admin Session

1. Click the Admin By Request icon in the macOS menu bar.

2. Select Request administrator access.

3. When prompted:

  • Click Yes to start the request.
  • Fill out the form with your email, phone number, and a brief reason.
  • Click OK to submit.

4. You will receive:

  • A confirmation that the request was submitted
  • Notification and email if the request is approved

5. Once approved:

  • Click Start to begin the session.
  • Read and accept the code of conduct.
  • The session begins and displays a countdown timer.

Windows

✅ Requesting to Install an Application

  2. Double-click the installer file.
  3. A form window will appear. Enter:
    • Your name
    • PLNU email
    • A brief reason for the install
  4. After submission:
    • You’ll receive a confirmation pop-up.
    • Once approved, you'll get a notification and email.
  5. Accept the code of conduct.
  6. Proceed with the installation.

  1. Click the Admin By Request desktop icon or task tray icon.
  2. Fill in the requested fields:
    • Your name
    • Email
    • Reason for access
  3. Submit the request.
  4. Once approved:
    • You will get a notification and email.
    • Accept the code of conduct.
    • A 15-minute admin session begins.
    • A countdown timer will show on your screen.
