What If My Device Doesn’t Have Wi-Fi?

If you are living in a PLNU residence hall, and your device doesn’t support Wi-Fi, don’t worry! There are still ways to get online. This guide explains your options.

🧩 Common Devices Without Built-In Wi-Fi

  • Older desktop or laptop computers
  • Certain gaming consoles
  • Media servers or home theater PCs
  • Smart TVs or media streaming boxes

✅ Option 1: USB Wi-Fi Adapter

If your device has a USB port and runs Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS, a USB Wi-Fi adapter is usually the best and easiest solution.

Common Devices That Can Use USB Adapters:
  • Older desktop or laptop computers
  • Some media servers or home theater PCs
  • Compatible Chromebooks or netbooks
Why It’s Recommended:
  • Simple setup – Plug-and-play for most systems
  • No complex configuration
  • Budget-friendly – Most cost under $20
  • Portable – Easily used with other devices
Compatibility Table:
Device Type Support
Windows 7/10/11 Fully supported
macOS Some adapters may require drivers
Chromebooks Most work out of the box
Game consoles / Smart TVs Generally not supported

💡 Tip: Look for dual-band adapters that support 5GHz Wi-Fi and WPA2 Enterprise, required for PLNU’s network.

🛠️ Option 2: Wi-Fi to Ethernet Adapter (Not Recommended)

If your device doesn’t support USB adapters (like many game consoles or media boxes), a Wi-Fi to Ethernet bridge is technically an option. However, we strongly discourage this route due to poor performance, inconsistent setup experiences, and limited support options.

Why We Don’t Recommend It:
  • Often requires complex, manual configuration through a web interface or mobile app
  • Many users report unreliable connections and frequent dropouts
  • Availability and product quality change often; we cannot recommend specific models
  • PLNU ITS does not support the setup or maintenance of these devices
  • ⚠️ Misconfigured devices can interfere with the campus network and may be blocked for security reasons

Important: If you still choose to explore this option, the device must clearly support bridge mode, client mode, or connecting wired devices to Wi-Fi. It must not broadcast its own ad-hoc or hotspot network.

🧭 Choosing the Right Option

While PLNU ITS cannot assist with purchasing or configuring adapters, these tips can help you make an informed choice.
