Troubleshooting Browser Issues

Browser issues can cause common problems like pages not loading, buttons not working, inability to submit forms, repeated login prompts, or content that looks misaligned. This guide walks through quick steps to rule out browser-related problems before you contact the Help Desk.

Step 1: Try Incognito or Private Browsing

Incognito or Private windows temporarily disable most stored site data and typically bypass cached files. This helps confirm whether the issue is caused by cookies, cached content, or extensions.

  1. Open an Incognito or Private window in your browser.
  2. Sign in again and repeat the action that failed.
  3. If the issue is resolved, proceed to Step 3 to clear cache and cookies.

Google Chrome Incognito
Mozilla Firefox Private Window
Safari Private Browsing
Microsoft Edge InPrivate

Step 2: Try a Different Browser

Testing a second browser helps isolate whether the issue is specific to one browser installation, version, or settings.

  1. Open the same site in a different browser.
  2. Sign in and try the same action again.
  3. If it works in the other browser, continue to Step 3 for the original browser.

Step 3: Clear Cache and Cookies

Clearing your cache and cookies from time to time is good tech hygiene. It can also help when your device is running slowly or when you are having trouble with a website or web app.

When you use a browser, it saves some information from websites in cookies and cache. Cache stores temporary files so pages load faster. Cookies store site data like session details and preferences. If this data becomes outdated or corrupted, it can cause login loops, slow performance, and display issues.

Website Slow to Load? It Could Be Your Cache

Clearing cache and temporary internet files helps your device run optimally and can fix issues like slow loading pages or formatting problems.

Will Clearing Cache Delete My Passwords?

Clearing cache does not automatically remove saved passwords, but your browser may offer options that could remove saved sign-in data if selected. Pay close attention to the checkboxes and selections during the clearing process.

Optional Step: Disable Extensions

Some browser extensions can interfere with websites, especially ad blockers, script blockers, password managers, and privacy tools.

  1. Temporarily disable extensions for the affected browser.
  2. Reload the site and try again.
  3. If the issue is resolved, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the cause.
